History: The Rolling Stone Weekender 2011

“Bathing in a sea of rock“ – the Kieler Nachrichten headline summed it up perfectly in the newspaper’s festival preview: 27 hand-picked bands and solo artists came together to create a real rock’n’roll festival in the third edition of the Rolling Stone Weekender. Clearly, the ideal November weekend does not have to be spent by the fireplace with candlelight and cookies. When The Notwist opened the festival on Friday at 5.15pm on the tent stage, the six-masted tent was already packed – the majority of guests had arrived in time to deposit their bags in their hotel rooms or apartments and the party could now begin for around 3,600 weekenders and 400 day trippers.

The third edition of the “laid-back festival at Weissenhäuser Strand” proved beyond all doubt: the Rolling Stone Weekender cultivates an especially friendly atmosphere which is not always in evidence at the bigger festivals these days. Or, as Elbow vocalist Guy Garvey noted: “It seems that I already met all of you this afternoon, when I was strolling around.”
